LAKE TOBA

Who doesn’t know lake toba? Located in North Sumatra, it is the largest volcanic lake in the world. But is the lake just about everything you can see there? Nope, you get to experience exposure to the local people’s the traditional life, the historical sites, the mountains the water, the sky, all to be enjoyed in a tranquil and relaxing atmosphere. Just about everything you can hope for, during a perfect holiday.
Formed by a prehistoric volcanic eruption, the lake is 100 km long, 30 km wide and 505 meters at its deepest point. It is about a four-hour-drive from the capital city Medan. The road leading to the lake is a bit bumpy but the view along the way is not bad. Spending the night in one of the hotels or inns around the lake is highly recommended, so you won’t miss the beautiful sunrise or sunset. There are many hotels offering a boat tour around the lake which will amaze you with its breathtaking view, the kind you shouldn’t miss taking pictures of. In the middle of the lake is, of course, the famous Samosir Island.
On Samosir Island, there are many villages with beautiful sceneries. The two must visits are Ambaritha and Tomok. In either village, there are guides who are willing to give you a short tour of the historical sites for Rp 50,000. The villages are known for their traditional Batak houses with their distincitive roof, which curve upwards at each end just like a boat’s hull, and their distinctive roof, which curve upwards at each end just like a boat’s hull, and their colorful décor. The graves of Batak Kings are also a main attraction there. In Ambaritha you must visit the historical stone chairs. Yep, you read it right! Ther are chairs and a round table in front of what used to be the King of Batak’s house, which is made of stone. It was the place where the king held trials for those who commited a crime. Amazing what our ancestors could do back then, right?
There are lots of things to do around the lake, but almostly people just sit around enjoying the view and the breeze. The magnificent panorama clears the mind and soothes the soul. It’s a perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of the big city. But in case you want to do something fun, you can swim, drive or fish in the lake. Some tourists even rent a motorbike to have a land tour around the lake. So, what are you waiting for? Pack your bags and enjoy the trip to Lake Toba.
